Sinus Augmentation
The posterior maxilla (the upper back jaw) can be a difficult area to place an implant due to the quality and quantity of the bone and the proximity of the maxillary sinus which can limit the amount of bone available for implant placement. If bone has been lost due to tooth loss or periodontal disease; this may complicate the situation even more.
Sinus augmentation can help correct this problem by lifting the sinus floor and increasing the amount of bone to allow for implant placement. A few techniques are available all with the goal of augmenting the bone height available for implant placement. The healing time after sinus augmentation can range from 4 to 6 months. Occasionally implants can be simultaneously placed at the time of sinus augmentation which can significantly reduce treatment time. There are many factors that will determine which technique is available to the patient.
